The Influence of Charismatic Renewal on Catholic Church Life in Niger State

The Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) has transformed the experiential dimensions of Catholic worship in many Nigerian dioceses, introducing elements of glossolalia, prophetic ministry, and emotional expressiveness into a traditionally liturgical tradition. This study examines the influence of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal on parish life, membership growth, and theological identity in selected Catholic parishes in Niger State, North Central Nigeria. A descriptive mixed-methods design was adopted, with questionnaires administered to 180 Catholic parishioners (CCR members and non-members) from six parishes in Minna, Bida, and Kontagora, alongside interviews with eight parish priests and four CCR prayer group leaders. Findings indicate that CCR participation significantly enhances personal spiritual engagement, with 78 percent of members reporting more vibrant personal prayer lives compared to pre-renewal experiences. Tension between CCR practices and traditional liturgical expectations is reported by 42 percent of non-CCR parishioners. Younger Catholics are disproportionately drawn to CCR activities. Some parish priests express concern about theological boundary-setting in CCR prayer meetings. The study concludes that the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Niger State enriches Catholic spiritual life while creating ecclesiological tensions that require careful pastoral management. It recommends that the Diocese of Minna develop guidelines for CCR activities that preserve Catholic theological identity while embracing Spirit-led renewal.
