The Influence of Traditional Institutions on Community Development in Ogun State

Traditional institutions, including monarchies, chieftaincies, and age-grade associations, continue to play significant roles in community governance, resource mobilization, and social regulation in many parts of South West Nigeria, despite the expansion of formal state structures. This study examines the influence of traditional institutions on community development in selected communities of Ogun State. A mixed-methods design was employed, with structured questionnaires administered to 300 community members across Ijebu-Ode, Abeokuta South, and Sagamu local government areas, complemented by eight semi-structured interviews with traditional rulers and community development officers. The Structural Functionalism perspective was applied in analyzing institutional roles. Results indicate that 76% of respondents credited traditional institutions with meaningful contributions to local infrastructure development, including road maintenance, market organization, and dispute resolution. Traditional rulers were rated as more accessible and responsive than elected local government officials by 68% of respondents. However, the developmental effectiveness of traditional institutions was significantly associated with the educational attainment of the ruling figure, with communities led by highly educated traditional rulers demonstrating higher levels of structured development initiative. Women's participation in traditional governance bodies was negligible, with only 4% of surveyed community governance positions held by women. Religious tensions between Christian and Muslim community members occasionally limited the unifying role of traditional institutions in religiously diverse communities. Recommendations include formal integration of traditional institutions into local government development planning committees and establishment of gender inclusion requirements for community governance bodies.
