The Interface Between German Language Competency and Nigeria’s Foreign Investment Climate: A Policy Analysis

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study analyses the interface between German language competency as a national educational output and Nigeria's capacity to attract and retain German and German-speaking foreign direct investment, developing an original policy framework that positions German language education as a strategic economic asset within Nigeria's investment promotion architecture. Germany remains one of the world's largest export economies and a significant source of foreign direct investment in African markets. Nigeria's share of German investment is disproportionately low relative to its economic size, and language barriers have been identified in investment climate surveys as a contributing factor. However, the empirical relationship between national German language educational capacity and investment attraction outcomes has not been formally modelled. The study employs a mixed-methods policy analysis design, combining econometric modelling of the relationship between German language educational investment and German FDI inflows across a panel of 15 African countries over a twenty-year period with a qualitative analysis of investment climate documents and interviews with 20 German investors currently operating in Nigeria. Findings suggest a statistically significant positive association between German language educational capacity and German FDI volumes at the country level. Qualitative data identify workforce communication competency, availability of German-speaking local managers, and cultural familiarity as key language-related investment determinants. Keywords: German language, foreign direct investment, Nigeria, investment climate, policy analysis.
