The Portugal-Nigeria Historical Relationship: Trade, Slavery, and Contemporary Diplomatic Ties

This study explores the historical and contemporary dimensions of the Portugal-Nigeria relationship, tracing its origins in the 15th-century Portuguese voyages to the Bight of Benin and the Atlantic slave trade through to the present-day bilateral diplomatic and economic relationship. Portugal was among the first European powers to establish sustained contact with the peoples of present-day Nigeria, and this early encounter profoundly shaped the trajectory of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and Portuguese-Nigerian cultural exchange. This descriptive historical-analytical research draws on secondary sources in Atlantic history, colonial studies, and contemporary diplomatic studies published between 2019 and 2024. The study examines the slave trade's demographic and social impact on communities in South-West and South-South Nigeria, the evolution of Portuguese-Nigerian diplomatic relations from 1960 independence, and current bilateral cooperation in areas of trade, cultural exchange, and migration. The research also considers the growing Portuguese-speaking Nigerian diaspora in Lisbon and the role of cultural memory in shaping contemporary Afro-Lusophone identities. Findings are expected to enrich undergraduate understanding of the long historical arc of European-Nigerian relations and the ongoing significance of the Atlantic historical encounter for bilateral diplomacy.
