The Pragmatics of Greetings in Yoruba: A Study of Urban and Rural Communicative Norms in Osun State

This study examines the pragmatic dimensions of greeting behaviour in Yoruba as practised in selected urban and rural communities in Osun State, South West Nigeria. Greetings in Yoruba culture are elaborate, contextually sensitive ritual speech acts that encode social hierarchy, time of day, occupation, gender, and life events, and their pragmatic study offers insight into broader patterns of Yoruba social organisation and linguistic ideology. The research employs a qualitative ethnographic approach guided by Speech Act Theory and Leech's politeness principles. Data were collected through participant observation of daily greeting interactions in three urban neighbourhoods in Osogbo and three rural communities in Ede and Iwo, supplemented by interviews with 40 community members on greeting norms and expectations. The analysis identifies and classifies greeting formulas by context, social relationship, and pragmatic function, mapping differences between urban and rural greeting repertoires. Findings reveal that rural communities maintain a significantly wider and more elaborate greeting repertoire than urban communities, with urban speakers showing a tendency toward greeting simplification influenced by time pressures and anonymity in public spaces. The study also documents the influence of Christianity and modernity on the replacement of traditional greeting formulas in urban Osun. The research contributes to Yoruba pragmatics scholarship and recommends the documentation of greeting repertoires as sociolinguistic heritage.
