The Role of Social Workers in Child Welfare Services in Lagos State, South West Nigeria

This study examines the role of social workers in child welfare services within Lagos State, focusing on how professional social work practice contributes to child protection outcomes. The prevalence of child abuse, neglect, and exploitation in Nigerian urban centres has intensified the need for qualified social workers who can effectively intervene in vulnerable family systems. Drawing on descriptive survey methodology, the study targets practising social workers attached to the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, child protection units, and registered NGOs operating within the state. A structured questionnaire is administered to a sample of 120 respondents, with data analysed using frequency distributions and simple percentages. The study reveals that social workers perform case management, family support, advocacy, and referral functions but are often constrained by inadequate staffing, low public awareness, and insufficient institutional backing. Findings also indicate that communities in low-income areas such as Mushin and Ajegunle benefit less from professional social work presence compared to more prosperous districts. The study recommends strengthening social work departments in government agencies, increasing public enlightenment on child rights, and improving welfare packages for frontline social workers. This research contributes to local understanding of child welfare gaps in Nigeria's most populous state and highlights areas requiring immediate policy attention.
