The Role of Yoruba Traditional Theatre in Promoting Cultural Identity Among Youth in Ibadan, Oyo State

This study examines the role of Yoruba traditional theatre in promoting cultural identity among young people in Ibadan, Oyo State. As globalisation continues to reshape cultural values, indigenous performing arts face the threat of marginalisation, particularly among urban youth. The research investigates how traditional theatre forms such as Alarinjo and Apidan are used to transmit Yoruba values, language, and social norms to the younger generation. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from secondary school students, theatre practitioners, and cultural educators across three local government areas in Ibadan. Structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews served as primary data collection instruments. Findings from the study indicate that while awareness of traditional theatre exists among respondents, active participation has declined significantly over the past decade. The study further reveals that institutional support for traditional performing arts remains inadequate in secondary school curricula within the state. The research concludes that traditional theatre remains a viable tool for cultural preservation but requires deliberate policy interventions and curriculum integration to sustain its influence. Recommendations include the inclusion of traditional performance modules in formal education and the establishment of cultural performance centres at the community level.
