The Theology of Healing and Medical Treatment Practices in RCCG Parishes in Delta State

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) is one of Nigeria's largest Pentecostal denominations with a significant presence in Delta State, South South Nigeria. The theological emphasis on divine healing within RCCG congregations creates complex dynamics around members' decisions regarding medical treatment. This study examines how RCCG members in Delta State navigate the relationship between faith in divine healing and recourse to medical care. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with questionnaires administered to 200 adult RCCG members from six parishes in Asaba, Warri, and Abraka, supplemented by interviews with eight parish pastors and five healthcare professionals who are RCCG members. Findings indicate that 67 percent of respondents believe divine healing is available for all illnesses through faith and prayer. However, 82 percent also report using medical treatment, suggesting a practice of dual recourse rather than exclusive faith healing. Delayed medical care due to initial prayer-only responses is reported by 23 percent of respondents, with serious health consequences in documented cases. Pastoral guidance on health-seeking behaviour is inconsistent. The study concludes that RCCG parishes in Delta State would benefit from a clear pastoral theology of health that affirms divine healing while actively endorsing prompt medical care as consistent with Christian stewardship of the body. A health theology education programme for RCCG Delta State parishes is recommended.
