The Use of Proverbs in Igala Traditional Communication in Kogi State

Proverbs are a foundational communicative resource in many Nigerian indigenous cultures, encoding cultural values, philosophical wisdom, and pragmatic guidance in compact forms that derive authority from their perceived ancestral origin. This study examines the use of proverbs in Igala traditional communication contexts in Kogi State, focusing on their deployment in dispute resolution proceedings, ceremonial addresses, and elder counsel sessions. Data were collected through participant observation at six traditional council sessions and four ceremonial events in Idah and Ankpa LGAs over a three-month period, supplemented by recorded interviews with ten recognized Igala proverb experts. A corpus of one hundred and forty-seven distinct proverbs was assembled, with each proverb documented in its original Igala form, translated, and analysed for communicative function and contextual triggers. Functional analysis reveals that proverbs are most densely deployed in dispute resolution contexts, where they serve as authoritative face-saving devices that reframe personal conflicts as general moral principles. In ceremonial contexts, proverbs function predominantly as blessings and warnings, while in elder counsel they serve instructional and cautionary functions. Structural analysis identifies a predominance of comparison and conditional form structures in the Igala proverb corpus. The study situates its findings within the broader literature on African proverbial communication and recommends the documentation and archiving of endangered Igala proverbs as a cultural preservation priority.
