Theatre and Corporate Social Responsibility: Performing Arts Partnerships with Nigerian Businesses

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the intersection of theatre and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Nigeria, investigating how performing arts organisations form partnerships with Nigerian businesses to advance cultural, educational, and community development objectives. Corporate sponsorship and CSR partnerships represent significant potential revenue sources for theatre organisations beyond government and foundation funding. The research analyses the nature, terms, and outcomes of CSR partnerships between theatre companies and corporations operating in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, drawing on interviews with arts administrators, corporate CSR managers, and partnership documentation. The study finds that CSR partnerships with theatre organisations remain relatively limited in Nigeria, with most corporate giving directed toward health, education, and environmental causes perceived as more directly aligned with development priorities. However, companies that have invested in arts partnerships report significant brand visibility and employee engagement benefits. Theatre organisations that successfully attract CSR funding demonstrate strong organisational governance, compelling impact narratives, and clear alignment between performance content and corporate values. The research concludes that a strategic advocacy effort is needed to position theatre as a legitimate CSR investment in Nigeria. Keywords: corporate social responsibility, theatre sponsorship, performing arts partnerships, Nigerian business, cultural funding.
