Theorising the Relationship Between Design Quality and National Competitiveness: The Nigerian Manufacturing Paradox

National competitiveness theory has insufficiently addressed the contribution of design quality as a systemic driver of manufacturing competitiveness, particularly in middle-income African economies where the relationship between design investment and industrial performance remains theoretically underdeveloped. This doctoral research theorises the relationship between design quality and national manufacturing competitiveness through a mixed-methods investigation of the Nigerian manufacturing sector, proposing an original Design-Competitiveness Integration Model applicable to economies at similar development trajectories. The study combines econometric analysis of panel data from the National Bureau of Statistics manufacturing sector surveys over a twelve-year period, supplemented by sectoral design investment proxies constructed from import substitution ratios and patent registration data, with qualitative case studies of six manufacturing enterprises that have achieved measurable competitiveness gains attributable to design strategy. Structural equation modelling tests hypothesised relationships between design quality indicators, total factor productivity, market share dynamics, and export competitiveness across twelve manufacturing subsectors. Findings reveal a paradox in which Nigerian manufacturing enterprises demonstrate internationally competitive production process capability alongside systematically under-developed product design quality, suppressing value capture and export market penetration. The Design-Competitiveness Integration Model developed from this analysis identifies four leverage points at which targeted design policy intervention can unlock competitiveness gains with the highest marginal returns.
