Towards an Original African Christian Theology of the State: Nigeria as a Constructive Case

The relationship between Christianity and the state in Africa has been shaped by colonial history, postcolonial political theology, and the contested practice of Nigerian democracy, yet a systematically developed African Christian theology of the state, capable of providing normative guidance for church-state relations in the contemporary African context, remains a significant gap in African theology. This study develops an original African Christian theology of the state, using Nigeria as its primary constructive case. The constructive theological methodology employs four stages: historical analysis of Christian-state relations in Nigeria from the colonial period to 2023, drawing on archival research and historiographical analysis; critical retrieval of the biblical theology of government, encompassing Romans 13, Revelation 13, and the prophetic tradition; critical engagement with the political theologies of O'Donovan, Moltmann, Wolterstorff, and the African political theology tradition; and original constructive synthesis that integrates biblical theology, African communal political philosophy (drawing on ubuntu and Igbo omoluwabi frameworks), and the Nigerian political context. Thirty in-depth interviews with Nigerian theologians, bishops, and political scientists grounded the constructive work in contextual realities. Original contributions include a Prophetic Citizenship Model that moves beyond both theocratic and quietist political theological frameworks, a theology of political accountability grounded in the covenant tradition, and a constructive engagement with the concept of a multi-religious democratic state from a specifically Christian theological vantage point. The theology provides normative guidance for Nigerian church-state engagement in the contemporary democratic context.
