Use of Mobile Library Services for Reaching Underserved Communities in Plateau State

This study examined the deployment and effectiveness of mobile library services in reaching underserved communities in Plateau State, North Central Nigeria. Mobile library services represent a practical strategy for extending information access to communities that lack fixed library infrastructure, including rural, displaced, and nomadic populations. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were collected from mobile library staff, community beneficiaries, and library management officials in six communities across three local government areas using structured questionnaires and field observation. Findings showed that mobile library visits were welcomed by community members and that literacy programmes delivered alongside book lending had improved school enrolment in targeted communities. However, the service was hampered by poor road conditions, vehicle maintenance problems, and insufficient funding for fuel and staff allowances. The study recommended increased government investment in mobile library operations, the inclusion of community liaison officers in service planning, and the creation of deposit collections in community centres to extend service reach between vehicle visits.
