📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
User experience (UX) design is an increasingly recognised driver of software product success, yet its integration into Nigerian software development firm workflows remains variable and under-researched. This study surveys UX design practices among Nigerian software development companies across Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, covering South West, North Central, and South South geopolitical zones. A quantitative survey instrument was administered to 55 UX designers, product managers, and software developers at 20 firms of varying sizes. The survey measures UX process maturity, use of user research methods, usability testing frequency, and design tool adoption. Findings show that 62 percent of respondents conduct user interviews before product design, but only 29 percent perform post-launch usability testing and fewer than 20 percent maintain living design systems. Smaller firms disproportionately skip UX research phases under client budget and timeline pressures. The study benchmarks findings against the Nielsen Norman Group's UX maturity model, classifying most Nigerian firms at levels 2 to 3 out of 6. Recommendations for professional practice include UX budget line items in project proposals, client education on UX return on investment, and university curriculum updates to embed UX engineering at undergraduate and PGD levels. This research provides the first quantitative baseline of UX practice maturity among Nigerian software firms. Keywords: user experience design, UX maturity, software firms, Nigeria, usability testing
