📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study applies value chain analysis to examine the competitive positioning of Nigerian cocoa export firms within the global cocoa supply chain. Nigeria is among Africa's top cocoa producers, yet its firms predominantly occupy lower value-added positions in the global chain, limiting the strategic returns from the commodity. Porter's value chain framework and global value chain theory provide the conceptual foundation. The research employs a mixed methods design, combining qualitative interviews with export firm managers, processing companies, and commodity traders in Ondo, Cross River, and Edo states with quantitative analysis of export unit value data from the Nigerian Export Promotion Council. In-depth interviews with twenty-five key informants were analyzed thematically, while export value data were analyzed using trend and comparative analysis. Findings reveal that Nigerian cocoa firms investing in primary processing, including fermentation quality improvement and grinding operations, achieve significantly higher unit export values and more stable buyer relationships than unprocessed bean exporters. The study identifies geographic indication certification and sustainability certification as the most impactful strategic tools for repositioning Nigerian cocoa toward premium market segments. The research concludes that Nigerian cocoa export firms must develop deliberate value chain upgrading strategies supported by collaborative investment in processing infrastructure and certification ecosystems. Keywords: value chain analysis, competitive positioning, cocoa export, Nigeria, global value chain.
