📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Cowpea is a major legume crop in North West Nigeria, serving both as a food security crop and an important traded commodity in rural and urban markets. In Zamfara State, the structure of cowpea marketing channels and the mechanisms of price formation remain poorly understood, limiting opportunities for farmer income improvement. This study analysed marketing channels and price formation for cowpea in Zamfara State. Primary data were collected from 85 cowpea producers, 40 assemblers, and 35 retailers across three local government areas using structured questionnaires and market surveys. Marketing margin analysis, price spread analysis, and marketing efficiency indices were computed. Results showed that the producer-assembler-retailer-consumer channel was the most dominant, with farmers receiving only 52 percent of the final consumer price. High transport costs, seasonal market glut at harvest, and limited storage capacity were the primary factors compressing farm gate prices. Traders with access to structured storage facilities were better positioned to exploit seasonal price arbitrage. The study recommends investing in community-level cowpea storage warehouses and promoting warehouse receipt systems to support price discovery. Improving market road infrastructure between production villages and district market centres is also essential. Keywords: cowpea, marketing channels, price formation, Zamfara State, marketing efficiency.
