Analysis of Cooperative Governance and Financial Performance in Agribusiness Cooperatives in Kaduna State, North West Nigeria

Cooperative governance is a foundational driver of organisational sustainability and financial performance in agribusiness cooperative structures. In Kaduna State, a significant proportion of agribusiness cooperatives have experienced governance failures, financial mismanagement, and member attrition, undermining their developmental contributions. This study analysed cooperative governance and financial performance in agribusiness cooperatives in Kaduna State. A sample of 40 registered agribusiness cooperatives was selected from three agricultural zones through stratified random sampling. Financial statements and governance documentation were reviewed, and key informant interviews were conducted with cooperative executives and members. A governance quality index was constructed and used in regression analysis to determine its association with financial performance indicators. Results revealed a significant positive association between governance quality scores and cooperative return on equity, member loan recovery rates, and asset growth ratios. Cooperatives with regularly conducted general assemblies, transparent financial reporting, and functioning supervisory boards outperformed others on all financial metrics. Elite capture of leadership positions and opaque procurement decisions were the leading governance failure modes. The study recommends strengthening cooperative supervision by the Kaduna State Ministry of Agriculture and introducing mandatory governance training for cooperative executives. External audit requirements should be enforced for cooperatives above specified asset thresholds. Keywords: cooperative governance, agribusiness, financial performance, Kaduna State, management.
