Analysis of Price Risk Management Strategies Among Commercial Vegetable Farmers in Oyo State, South West Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Price risk is one of the most significant challenges facing commercial vegetable farmers in Nigeria, where highly perishable produce and fragmented market structures create extreme price volatility. In Oyo State, commercial vegetable enterprises surrounding Ibadan supply urban markets with tomatoes, pepper, and leafy vegetables, yet price risk management remains largely informal and reactive. This study analysed price risk management strategies among commercial vegetable farmers in Oyo State. A structured questionnaire was administered to 58 commercial vegetable farmers from four production zones around Ibadan. Data captured price risk perception, management strategies employed, strategy effectiveness ratings, and enterprise financial performance indicators. Descriptive statistics and a risk management effectiveness index were applied. Results showed that contract selling to supermarkets and institutions, staggered planting to spread market entry timing, and diversification across vegetable crop types were the most widely adopted risk management strategies. Collective marketing through farmer groups was used by only 26 percent of respondents despite being associated with the highest price realisation outcomes. Over 62 percent of farmers cited the absence of forward pricing mechanisms as a significant unaddressed risk. The study recommends establishing a commodity exchange or structured forward contract system for Oyo State vegetable producers and strengthening extension advisory on diversification-based risk management planning. Keywords: price risk management, vegetable farmers, Oyo State, market risk, commercial farming.
