Land Use Mapping and Spatial Analysis of Urban Sprawl in Ibadan Metropolis, Oyo State

Urban sprawl has become a prominent planning challenge in Nigerian cities, particularly in rapidly expanding metropolitan areas like Ibadan. This study investigates land use changes and spatial patterns of urban sprawl in Ibadan Metropolis, Oyo State, using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools and remote sensing data from 2018 to 2023. The research adopts a descriptive survey approach, combining satellite imagery analysis with field observations to document the extent and direction of outward city growth. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 200 residents and planning officials in selected wards, while secondary data were sourced from the Oyo State Urban Development Board and National Population Commission. Findings are expected to reveal significant encroachment of urban land uses into previously agricultural and peri-urban areas, driven by population pressure, speculative land acquisition, and inadequate development control enforcement. The study evaluates the adequacy of the existing Ibadan Master Plan in managing these spatial transformations. It further examines the environmental implications of sprawl, particularly loss of green spaces, flooding risk, and infrastructure strain. Recommendations focus on strengthening land use regulation, activating buffer zones, and promoting transit-oriented development as a containment strategy. This research contributes to baseline planning data for Ibadan and offers practical insights for urban planners and local government authorities seeking to manage growth sustainably.
