Examination of Transportation Network Planning in Lokoja, Kogi State

Lokoja, situated at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers, occupies a strategically important position as the capital of Kogi State and a gateway between northern and southern Nigeria. Despite this significance, its transportation network has not kept pace with population and commercial growth. This study examines transportation network planning in Lokoja, analysing road connectivity, transport service coverage, and the alignment of existing infrastructure with urban development patterns. A mixed-methods design was used, combining spatial network analysis with a survey of 195 commuters and transport operators across the city's main residential and commercial zones. Data on road classifications, pavement condition, and traffic volumes were obtained from the Kogi State Ministry of Works and Transport. GPS tracking of commercial vehicle routes was used to document actual transport service coverage relative to residential density. Findings are expected to reveal connectivity gaps between the old town area and newer residential developments on Lokoja's periphery, compounded by poor road surfaces and inadequate bridge maintenance affecting river crossing routes. The study further examines how the planned construction of the Second Niger Bridge and associated road upgrades may alter urban mobility patterns. Recommendations include a multi-modal transport masterplan for Lokoja, prioritization of maintenance on existing strategic roads, and integration of future transport corridor planning with land use zoning to prevent unserviced sprawl.
