The Application of Hausa Language Skills in Diplomatic Communication: Nigerian Foreign Service Perspectives

Hausa is one of the most widely spoken languages in West and Central Africa, with a significant speaker population extending through Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Ghana, and Sudan, making it a strategically valuable language competency for Nigerian diplomats and foreign service professionals operating across these regions. This study examines the application of Hausa language skills in diplomatic and foreign service communication from the perspective of Nigerian Foreign Ministry professionals with relevant regional postings. A professional practice research design was employed, using structured interviews with 20 Nigerian Foreign Service officers who had served in West or Central African postings where Hausa proficiency was relevant, supplemented by interviews with four Ministry of Foreign Affairs language advisors. The study assesses contexts of Hausa language use in diplomatic practice, the degree to which formal training supports language proficiency development, and the professional value assigned to Hausa competency by foreign service management. Findings reveal that Hausa language proficiency is used in informal community engagement, bilateral meetings with officials from Hausa-speaking communities in neighbouring countries, and cultural diplomacy programming, though formal diplomatic negotiations are conducted primarily in French or English. The ministry provides no formal Hausa language training for foreign service staff. Recommendations address establishment of a Hausa language proficiency development programme for Foreign Service officers posted to relevant regions and recognition of Hausa language competency in diplomatic career advancement frameworks.
