Assessment of Floriculture Business Development Opportunities in Kano State, North West Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Floriculture, encompassing the commercial production of cut flowers, potted plants, and ornamental foliage, represents a nascent but rapidly growing segment of Nigeria's horticultural economy. In Kano State, urbanization, growing middle-class incomes, and increasing demand for flowers at weddings, corporate events, and public spaces are creating viable commercial opportunities for floriculture enterprise development. This study assesses the market potential, production feasibility, and business development environment for floriculture enterprises in Kano State. A market survey involving 200 potential consumers, 30 event planners, and 20 ornamental plant retailers was conducted using structured questionnaires and key informant interviews. Climatic suitability assessment for key cut flower crops including chrysanthemum, carnation, and gerbera was performed using historical climate data. Results indicate strong latent demand for locally produced cut flowers among corporate and event consumers, with 72 percent of respondents currently sourcing flowers from Lagos or via imports. Climatic analysis suggests that high-altitude areas of Kano State offer potential for year-round chrysanthemum and gerbera production. The study recommends a public-private floriculture development pilot in Kano State's highland zones, supported by a market linkage program connecting producers with event planners and retailers. Keywords: floriculture, ornamental plants, business development, Kano State, market potential
