Relationship Between Home Economics Education and Household Financial Management in Adamawa State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study investigates the relationship between Home Economics Education and household financial management practices among adults in Adamawa State, North East Nigeria. Effective household financial management, encompassing budgeting, saving, debt management, and expenditure control, is a core life skill addressed by the Home Economics curriculum. Using a descriptive survey design, the study targets 250 adult respondents who attended secondary school in Yola North and Mubi North local government areas. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire assessing prior Home Economics instruction and current financial management practices. Objectives include determining the level of Home Economics Education attained by respondents, examining their household financial management competencies, and assessing the contribution of Home Economics training to financial behaviour. Recent literature identifies Home Economics education as a significant predictor of household budgeting and savings behaviour among Nigerian adults. Data were analysed using Pearson correlation and simple regression. The Life Skills Education Framework anchors the study, recognising financial literacy as a key life competency developed through formal education. Findings are anticipated to reveal a significant positive relationship between Home Economics instruction and financial management competency. Recommendations target the Adamawa State Ministry of Education and curriculum planners to reinforce financial management content within the Home Economics syllabus.
