Managing Igbo Language Resource Centres in Federal Universities: Administrative Challenges and Best Practices

This study examines the administrative challenges and emerging best practices in the management of Igbo language resource centres within federal universities in South East and South South Nigeria. Language resource centres serve as institutional infrastructure for mother-tongue language teaching, research support, oral literature archiving, and public language services, yet their administrative management has received limited systematic scholarly attention. The research adopts a multi-site case study approach, collecting data from five language resource centres across five federal universities through interviews with centre directors, administrative staff, and faculty users, as well as document analysis of centre policies, budget reports, and annual activity records. Findings reveal common administrative challenges including inadequate and inconsistent funding cycles, equipment deterioration due to poor maintenance protocols, insufficient qualified staffing, and weak integration between resource centre services and departmental teaching programmes. Best practices identified include collaborative grant writing, alumni-funded resource procurement, and structured timetabling of centre use by departments. The study develops a descriptive management framework for Igbo language resource centres and recommends the adoption of formal administrative standards by the National Universities Commission.
