Evaluating the Effectiveness of the Igbo Language Component in the National Youth Service Corps Orientation Programme

This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Igbo language component within the National Youth Service Corps orientation programme at NYSC camps in South East Nigeria, examining how this component contributes to corpers' linguistic competence, cultural appreciation, and intercultural communication capacity. The NYSC scheme represents a unique nationwide platform for promoting Nigerian language awareness among graduates posted to culturally unfamiliar regions, yet the language component of its orientation curriculum has never been subjected to a formal effectiveness evaluation. The study adopts a mixed-methods evaluation design, administering pre-orientation and post-orientation Igbo language awareness assessments to two hundred and ninety-six corpers at two NYSC camps in Anambra and Enugu states, supplemented by focus group discussions with eighteen corpers and interviews with six orientation camp language facilitators. Findings indicate a statistically significant improvement in Igbo cultural knowledge and basic phrase competence following orientation, but a minimal effect on practical conversational Igbo ability, attributable to the brevity of language instruction sessions. Non-Igbo corpers demonstrate the greatest proportional knowledge gains. Corpers from northern states express the highest motivation to learn Igbo for community integration purposes. Recommendations include extending language sessions from two to eight hours and integrating community immersion language activities into the service year programme.
