Professional Ethics in Igbo Language Translation and Interpretation: Standards and Practice Challenges in Nigeria

This study examines professional ethics standards and practice challenges in Igbo language translation and interpretation in Nigeria, focusing on practitioners working in legal, medical, religious, and commercial contexts. Professional ethics in translation and interpretation encompasses principles of accuracy, confidentiality, impartiality, professional competence, and conflict of interest management, yet the application of these principles within the Igbo language professional community remains informally governed and inconsistently practised. The study adopts a professional survey methodology, administering a structured ethics practice questionnaire to eighty-nine self-identified Igbo language translators and interpreters drawn from a national network database, supplemented by focus group discussions with fourteen practitioners in Lagos, Abuja, and Enugu. Findings reveal that the majority of practitioners have received no formal training in translation ethics, with professional learning occurring primarily through on-the-job experience. Confidentiality breaches and accuracy compromises are reported as the most frequently encountered ethical dilemmas. The absence of a formal Igbo language translators and interpreters professional association is identified as the primary structural gap preventing the development and enforcement of enforceable ethical codes. The study recommends the establishment of a Nigerian Association of Igbo Translators and Interpreters and proposes a draft professional ethics code as a foundation document.
