📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study evaluates the relevance and implementation quality of the Igbo language curriculum at the junior secondary school level in Abia State, South East Nigeria. Curriculum relevance refers to the degree to which curriculum content, objectives, and learning activities align with learner needs, community values, and contemporary societal demands, while implementation quality addresses the fidelity and effectiveness of curriculum enactment in classrooms. The study adopts a curriculum evaluation methodology combining document analysis of the current JSS Igbo curriculum framework with classroom observation data from thirty-five schools, teacher interview data from sixty Igbo teachers, and student focus group discussions across all three senatorial zones of Abia State. Evaluation criteria are derived from a locally adapted curriculum quality framework. Findings indicate that the existing curriculum, last revised in 2012, contains significant content gaps relative to contemporary Igbo language usage, particularly in digital communication, contemporary Igbo literature, and practical oral communication domains. Implementation quality is rated as moderate, constrained by inadequate instructional materials, classroom overcrowding, and teacher content knowledge gaps. Student engagement is notably lower in curriculum units perceived as remote from everyday language experience. Recommendations include immediate curriculum revision, teacher curriculum training workshops, and an annual curriculum review mechanism. Keywords: Igbo curriculum, junior secondary, Abia State, curriculum evaluation, implementation.
