Application of Islamic Principles in Human Resource Management in Muslim-Owned Enterprises in Kaduna State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the application of Islamic principles in human resource management (HRM) within Muslim-owned enterprises in Kaduna State, North West Nigeria. Islamic HRM draws on Quranic and Prophetic guidance on justice, fairness, consultation (Shura), and the dignity of workers, offering a value-based alternative or complement to conventional HRM frameworks. The study employs a descriptive survey design, administering questionnaires to 100 HR managers and business owners in Muslim-owned small and medium enterprises across Kaduna North, Kaduna South, and Chikun local government areas. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. Findings indicate that while Islamic HRM principles are widely endorsed by respondents in theory, their formal institutionalisation in HR policies and procedures is limited. Practices relating to just wages and workplace safety show higher compliance than those relating to consultative decision-making and employee grievance mechanisms. The study recommends the development of Islamic HRM policy templates for Muslim business owners, capacity-building workshops on Islamic management ethics, and the inclusion of Islamic organisational behaviour modules in business programmes at Kaduna State University. Keywords: Islamic HRM, human resource management, Muslim enterprises, Kaduna State, workplace ethics.
