Evaluation of Visual Standards Compliance Among Commercial Drivers in Ogun State

Visual fitness for driving is a fundamental road safety requirement, yet systematic eye screening for commercial drivers in Nigeria remains poorly enforced. This study evaluates visual standards compliance among commercial vehicle drivers in Ogun State, South West Nigeria. A cross-sectional descriptive study will be conducted, targeting 350 commercial drivers recruited from major motor parks in Abeokuta, Sagamu, and Ijebu-Ode. Distance visual acuity will be assessed using a standard Snellen chart, and contrast sensitivity and color vision will be tested to screen for additional visual impairments relevant to driving safety. A structured questionnaire will document driving experience, history of accidents, prior eye examination, and knowledge of the minimum visual standards required for commercial driving in Nigeria. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics and logistic regression. The study expects to find a significant proportion of drivers failing to meet the minimum visual acuity standard for commercial driving, with low rates of prior eye examination. Findings will be submitted to the Federal Road Safety Corps Ogun Sector and the Ogun State Vehicle Inspection Service to advocate for mandatory periodic vision assessment as part of commercial driver licensing renewal. This research contributes critical safety evidence to the literature on driver vision in Nigeria's South West zone and reinforces the role of optometrists in road safety governance.
