Evaluation of Infection Control Practices in Optometry Clinics in Enugu and Ebonyi States

Infection control is a non-negotiable component of safe clinical practice in optometry, encompassing disinfection of diagnostic equipment, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment use, and proper disposal of single-use materials. This study evaluates infection control practices in registered optometry clinics in Enugu and Ebonyi States, both in Nigeria's South East geopolitical zone. A cross-sectional observational audit will be conducted across 25 private and public optometry clinics, with standardized observation checklists used to assess compliance with infection prevention protocols during patient consultations. Structured interviews with clinic staff will document formal training in infection control, availability of disinfection materials, and written infection control policies. Data analysis will employ descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. The study anticipates that a significant proportion of clinics will demonstrate deficiencies in the disinfection of slit-lamp chin rests, tonometer tips, trial lenses, and frame adjusting instruments. Findings will be submitted to ODORBN's clinical standards committee and the Enugu State Ministry of Health to inform regulatory inspections and CPD requirements for infection control. This study addresses an under-investigated area of clinical governance in Nigerian optometry and provides actionable evidence for improving patient safety standards in South East optometry clinics.
