Environmental Degradation and Community Displacement in the Niger Delta: A Sociological Study

Environmental degradation resulting from petroleum extraction, gas flaring, and associated industrial activities in the Niger Delta has generated forms of ecological displacement that existing sociological literature has not fully captured in their communal and intergenerational dimensions. This study examines the relationship between environmental degradation and community displacement in selected communities of Ondo State's riverine zones, at the margins of the Niger Delta region. A qualitative approach was employed, with twenty semi-structured interviews conducted with community members, eight focus group discussions with women's and youth groups, and four key informant interviews with environmental officials and community development officers in Ilaje and Ese-Odo local government areas. The Environmental Justice and Political Ecology frameworks were applied. Findings reveal that progressive deterioration of fishing yields attributable to pollution and mangrove destruction had forced 63% of interviewed households to reduce fishing activity by more than half over the past decade. Involuntary displacement motivated by environmental factors rather than acute conflict was documented in three of five communities visited, representing a slow-onset displacement pattern. Children's nutritional status was linked directly to fishing income decline by 81% of respondents. Women fish processors had experienced the most severe livelihood collapse. Community collective action against oil companies had generated negligible remediation, with most legal actions stalled for years in federal courts. Recommendations include dedicated environmental displacement legal protections, community-led environmental monitoring systems, and accelerated judicial processing of environmental compensation cases in the region.
