An Empirical Analysis of the Effects of Internal Migration on Social Integration in Abuja’s Satellite Towns

The rapid population growth of Abuja's satellite towns through internal migration from diverse Nigerian regions has created complex social integration challenges that are understudied relative to the social dynamics of the urban core. This study empirically examines the effects of internal migration on social integration in Nyanya, Kubwa, and Lugbe satellite towns in the Federal Capital Territory. A cross-sectional empirical design was adopted, with structured questionnaires administered to 440 internal migrants who had resided in the satellite towns for periods ranging from six months to ten years. Social integration was measured across four dimensions: economic, civic, social relational, and identity integration. Multiple regression analysis identified migration-related predictors of integration outcomes. Results indicate that length of residence was the strongest predictor of social relational integration, with each additional year of residence associated with a 0.18 standard deviation increase in integration score. Ethnic heterogeneity of residential neighborhood was negatively associated with social relational integration but positively associated with civic integration, suggesting that diverse environments promote formal but not informal intergroup contact. Shared religious identity was the strongest cross-ethnic social bond, facilitating integration across ethnic lines more effectively than shared neighborhood residence alone. Economic integration was achieved fastest, with 78% of migrants securing some income within three months. Identity integration, marked by attachment to the FCT community alongside home region identity, was lowest at 31% achieving high integration after five years. The study provides a multidimensional empirical baseline for migration-integration research in Nigeria's capital territory.
