Challenges of Teaching Auto Mechanics in Technical Colleges in Gombe State

This study identified and analyzed the challenges confronting the teaching of auto mechanics in technical colleges in Gombe State, North East Nigeria. Auto mechanics is one of the most economically valuable vocational trades in Nigeria, given the country's large vehicle population and the constant demand for repair and maintenance services. However, the quality of auto mechanics instruction in many technical colleges is undermined by systemic challenges. The study used a descriptive survey design, collecting data from 80 auto mechanics instructors and 200 students across four technical colleges. A structured questionnaire and practical skills assessment checklist served as the primary instruments. Findings revealed that outdated workshop vehicles, absence of modern diagnostic equipment, insufficient consumable materials such as engine oil and brake fluids, and high instructor-to-student ratios were the most critical challenges. Over 70 percent of instructors indicated that they had not received any professional development or equipment upgrade support in the past three years. The study recommends that the Gombe State Technical and Vocational Education Board procure at least two modern training vehicles per college, establish a consumables replenishment fund, and institutionalize annual professional development workshops for auto mechanics instructors. Partnerships with major automobile dealers and servicing companies in Gombe should be formalized for equipment support.
