Challenges of Implementing Garment Making Curriculum in Technical Colleges in Kano State

This study investigated the challenges of implementing the garment making curriculum in technical colleges in Kano State, North West Nigeria. The fashion and garment industry is one of Nigeria's fastest-growing creative sectors, and garment making education has the potential to supply skilled tailors, fashion designers, and textile entrepreneurs to an expanding market. The study used a descriptive survey design, with data collected from 90 garment making instructors and 270 students from six technical colleges across Kano metropolitan and rural educational zones. Instruments included a curriculum implementation assessment questionnaire and a focus group guide. Findings revealed significant challenges including outdated sewing machines, insufficient fabric and thread allowances, lack of modern design pattern software, and poor linkage between college training and contemporary fashion industry demands. Over 65 percent of instructors had not updated their pedagogical approaches in more than four years. The study recommends that Kano State procure modern industrial sewing machines and CAD-based design tools for all technical colleges, develop a revised garment making curriculum in partnership with the Kano State Fashion Designers Association, and sponsor instructors for annual industry refresher courses. These recommendations address both the technical and pedagogical gaps undermining garment making education in the North West zone.
