📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examined supervision practices and their relationship to quality assurance in vocational education programmes in Ondo State, South West Nigeria. Academic supervision is a quality management tool that, when systematically applied, ensures instructional standards are upheld and institutional improvement targets are met. A descriptive survey design was used, with data collected from 80 supervisors, 160 vocational teachers, and 20 school principals through structured questionnaires and unannounced classroom observation checklists. Results indicated that supervision in the majority of schools was irregular, infrequent, and confined to annual ministry inspections, with little follow-up or formative feedback. Only 35 percent of vocational teachers reported receiving instructional feedback from supervisors in the current academic year. Schools with more frequent and constructive supervision practices demonstrated measurably higher programme quality scores on the quality assurance checklist. The study recommends that the Ondo State Ministry of Education adopt an integrated supervision model combining internal school-based supervision with external inspectorate visits, develop supervisor training programmes focused on vocational education quality indicators, and mandate written supervisory feedback reports after each visit. A state-wide vocational education quality assurance framework should be developed and published. These findings address a critical gap in the management and governance literature on vocational education in South West Nigeria. Keywords: supervision practices, quality assurance, vocational education, Ondo State, instructional quality.
