Relevance of Building Technology Programme to Construction Industry Needs in Kogi State

This study examines the relevance of the building technology programme to the needs of the construction industry in Kogi State, North Central Nigeria. The construction sector is a significant employer in Nigeria, yet industry stakeholders frequently report that graduates of building technology programmes lack the practical competencies required for productive employment. The study is guided by the human capital theory, which links educational investment to productive labour market outcomes. A descriptive survey design is used, drawing 100 building technology graduates, 40 construction firm managers, and 20 programme lecturers from institutions in Lokoja, Ankpa, and Idah local government areas. Three validated questionnaires capture graduate competencies, employer expectations, and programme delivery quality. Data are analysed using frequency distributions, mean scores, and independent t-tests. Findings are expected to reveal a substantial relevance gap, particularly in areas of site management, building codes compliance, and use of modern construction equipment. The study also examines the role of industrial attachment in bridging this gap. Recommendations include curriculum revision involving industry professionals, mandatory site-based project modules, and equipment procurement aligned with current industry specifications. The study provides targeted recommendations for polytechnics and technical institutions in Kogi State and contributes to the broader national discourse on aligning vocational education with sectoral workforce needs.
