Effectiveness of Demonstration Method in Teaching Plumbing Technology in Technical Schools in Ebonyi State

This study evaluates the effectiveness of the demonstration method of instruction in teaching plumbing technology in technical schools in Ebonyi State, South East Nigeria. Plumbing technology is a practical vocational subject requiring procedural skill acquisition, making the demonstration method particularly suited as a primary instructional approach. Despite its widespread advocacy, there is limited empirical data on its specific effectiveness in the Nigerian technical school context. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test control group structure is employed, involving 100 Year Two National Technical Certificate students in Abakaliki, Onueke, and Ishiagu technical schools. The experimental group receives instruction through live demonstrations combined with guided practice, while the control group follows conventional lecture-based instruction. Plumbing competency tests covering pipe fitting, valve installation, and drainage systems are developed and validated by plumbing professionals. Data are analysed using independent samples t-test and analysis of covariance. The study predicts significantly higher achievement scores and competency ratings for the demonstration group. Findings will clarify the comparative advantage of demonstration over conventional instruction in practical vocational subjects. Recommendations include the provision of adequate plumbing demonstration kits for all technical school workshops, teacher training in step-by-step demonstration technique, and periodic student performance assessments linked to demonstration sessions. This study contributes to instructional methods research in plumbing vocational education and supports evidence-based teaching reform in Ebonyi State.
