Assessment of Alumni Contribution to Technical Institution Development in South East Nigeria

This study assesses the contribution of alumni associations to the development of technical education institutions in South East Nigeria, covering selected polytechnics and technical colleges in Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi States. Alumni represent a critical but often underutilised resource for institutional development, offering networks, expertise, financial contributions, and advocacy. Despite growing alumni engagement in some Nigerian universities, the contribution of technical institution alumni remains poorly documented. A descriptive survey design is employed, engaging 100 alumni association officials, 40 institutional managers, and 20 alumni programme coordinators from 10 institutions. A structured questionnaire measures alumni engagement activities, financial contributions, mentorship involvement, career placement support, and institutional development outcomes attributed to alumni efforts. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis assess the impact of alumni engagement levels on institutional development indicators. Findings are expected to reveal that most technical institution alumni associations are inactive or donor-focused, with limited engagement in mentorship, curriculum advisory, or advocacy roles. The study also identifies best practices from institutions with active and impactful alumni networks. Recommendations include structured alumni engagement strategies, online alumni platforms, and clear institutional policies on alumni involvement in governance and development. This study contributes to institutional development research in Nigerian technical education and provides a practical alumni engagement framework for South East polytechnics and technical colleges.
