Stage Design and Set Construction Practices in Professional Nigerian Theatre: Standards and Innovations

This study examines the professional practices of stage design and set construction in Nigerian theatre, evaluating current standards and emerging innovations in the field. Stage design encompasses the visual conception of performance space, including scenic elements, colour, texture, and spatial organisation, and plays a central role in defining the aesthetic and communicative character of a production. The research investigates how professional set designers in Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Abuja develop their design concepts, source materials, and construct sets within the practical constraints of the Nigerian theatre environment. Data were gathered through professional interviews, observation of design processes, review of production photographs and design drawings, and attendance at productions. The study finds that professional stage design in Nigeria is a growing but underresourced field, with designers frequently improvising innovative solutions in response to budget limitations and material scarcity. Digital design tools are increasingly adopted for concept visualisation but face adoption barriers due to equipment costs. The research concludes that the professionalisation of stage design requires formal training pathways, standardised material sourcing networks, and greater recognition of design as a core element of theatrical production quality.
