Theatre Criticism and Reviewing in Nigeria: Standards, Challenges, and Professional Development

This study examines the state of theatre criticism and reviewing in Nigeria, assessing the standards of critical practice, the institutional challenges confronting critics, and the opportunities for professional development in the field. Theatre criticism serves as a vital interface between performance and the public, providing analytical perspectives that can enhance audience understanding, stimulate artistic debate, and contribute to the professional development of theatre practitioners. The research investigates the training, working conditions, and critical methodologies of theatre reviewers writing for print, broadcast, and digital platforms in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. Data were gathered through interviews with established theatre critics, editors of cultural publications, and theatre directors, complemented by content analysis of published reviews. The study finds that theatre criticism in Nigeria remains underdeveloped relative to the size and dynamism of the performance sector, with most reviewers lacking formal training in theatrical analysis. Editors report difficulty sustaining dedicated theatre review sections in mainstream media due to perceived limited reader interest. The research concludes that the development of a professional theatre criticism culture requires institutional investment, including training programmes, dedicated publication platforms, and formal recognition of criticism within the arts ecosystem.
