Managing Touring Productions: Logistics, Contracts, and Quality Control in Nigerian Inter-State Theatre Tours

This study examines the professional management of touring theatre productions across Nigerian states, investigating the logistical, contractual, and quality assurance challenges involved in sustaining high-quality performance across diverse performance contexts. Theatre touring is a critical mechanism for widening access to live performance beyond major urban centres and for extending the commercial lifespan of productions. The research analyses the touring practices of selected professional theatre companies that have mounted inter-state tours across three or more geopolitical zones, drawing on interviews with tour managers, company directors, and venue operators. Data were complemented by review of touring contracts, production riders, and post-tour evaluation reports. The study finds that Nigerian theatre touring faces significant logistical obstacles including unreliable transport infrastructure, inconsistently equipped venue spaces, and the absence of standardised venue contracts. Production quality frequently deteriorates across tour legs as technical resources and rehearsal time diminish. The research concludes that a formal touring infrastructure, including a national venue network with agreed technical standards and a professional touring management framework, is necessary for sustainable theatre touring in Nigeria.
