Professional Development of Energy Managers in Nigerian Industrial Facilities: Skills Gap Analysis

Industrial energy management in Nigeria is constrained by a shortage of professionally trained energy managers with competencies in energy auditing, monitoring and targeting, efficiency project management, and regulatory compliance, limiting the pace at which industrial facilities adopt energy efficiency practices. This study conducts a skills gap analysis for energy managers in Nigerian industrial facilities, comparing current competency levels against professional benchmarks derived from the Association of Energy Engineers Certified Energy Manager framework and Nigerian industrial sector energy management requirements. A structured survey was administered to 95 energy professionals working in manufacturing, oil and gas support services, and utilities across Lagos, Rivers, Delta, and Kano States. The survey assessed self-reported competency levels across twelve energy management skill domains, current professional development activities, access to training resources, and perceived barriers to skills acquisition. Employer interviews with 20 facility managers supplemented self-assessments with objective performance observations. Results identify the largest skill gaps in energy monitoring and reporting systems, energy procurement and contract management, and financial analysis of energy projects. Only 32 percent of respondents hold a relevant professional certification, and 67 percent report having received no formal energy management training in the preceding three years. The study recommends establishment of a National Energy Management Professionals Register and endorsement of a structured continuing professional development pathway through the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria.
