Strategic Management Practices and Competitive Positioning of Medium-Scale Enterprises in Kaduna State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study evaluates the strategic management practices employed by medium-scale enterprises in Kaduna State and assesses their effect on competitive positioning within the North West geopolitical zone. Kaduna's industrial base spans textile manufacturing, food processing, and wholesale trade, making it a diverse context for examining applied strategic management. The research employs a survey design, collecting data from managing directors and operations heads of thirty-five medium-scale enterprises in Kaduna North and Kaduna South using structured questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and multiple regression. Findings indicate that enterprises practicing continuous environmental scanning, goal-setting reviews, and deliberate competitive positioning strategies demonstrate measurably stronger market standing in terms of customer retention, pricing power, and supplier leverage. The study finds that informal strategy practices are widespread among medium-scale enterprises but are significantly less effective than formalized approaches. Strategic leadership quality, defined as the capacity of owners and senior managers to align organizational actions with defined competitive goals, emerges as the strongest predictor of positioning outcomes. The study concludes that medium-scale enterprises in Kaduna must invest in professional strategic management capacity, either through training or advisory engagement, to improve their competitive standing. Recommendations include government-sponsored strategic management clinics targeting SME operators in the North West zone. Keywords: strategic management, competitive positioning, medium-scale enterprises, Kaduna State, organizational strategy.
