📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study investigates the relationship between strategic communication practices and stakeholder engagement effectiveness in multinational oil companies operating in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Persistent community conflicts and reputational challenges have underscored the strategic importance of effective stakeholder communication for oil sector operations. The research targets corporate affairs managers, community development officers, and government relations directors of five multinational oil companies with operations in Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa states. A total of 80 respondents were selected through purposive sampling. Questionnaires and in-depth interviews provided the primary data. Analysis employed descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Findings indicate that oil companies employing multi-channel strategic communication strategies, incorporating community engagement meetings, multilingual information dissemination, and social media platforms, achieve significantly higher stakeholder engagement quality scores than those relying solely on formal written communications. Consistent and transparent communication during environmental incidents is identified as the most critical determinant of community trust preservation. The study finds that strategic communication gaps during project planning phases are a primary cause of community resistance during implementation. The research concludes that multinational oil companies in the Niger Delta must elevate strategic communication to an executive-level function with dedicated investment and performance measurement frameworks. Keywords: strategic communication, stakeholder engagement, multinational oil companies, Niger Delta, community relations.
