Knowledge Spillovers, Strategic Learning, and Cluster Performance in Nigeria’s Manufacturing Industrial Zones

This dissertation investigates knowledge spillover mechanisms, strategic learning processes, and their combined effects on cluster performance in Nigeria's manufacturing industrial zones. Industrial clustering theory predicts knowledge spillover benefits for co-located firms, yet the strategic management mechanisms through which Nigerian firms capture, internalize, and leverage inter-firm knowledge flows remain theoretically underdeveloped. Cluster theory, knowledge spillover theory, and strategic learning theory provide the integrated theoretical foundation. The research employs a mixed methods design combining a quantitative analysis of innovation and productivity data from 120 firms in three Nigerian industrial zones, namely Ota in Ogun State, Sharada in Kano State, and Trans-Amadi in Rivers State, with qualitative comparative case studies of twelve firms demonstrating contrasting spillover capture patterns. Spatial econometric models accounting for geographic knowledge spillover decay were applied to quantitative data. Findings reveal that knowledge spillover intensity in Nigerian industrial zones is significantly moderated by firms' strategic learning postures: firms with deliberate inter-firm learning strategies, including formalized technical benchmarking, joint problem-solving arrangements, and employee mobility policies, capture disproportionately higher knowledge spillover benefits than passive co-location beneficiaries. The study identifies zone-level institutional actors, particularly industrial associations and zone management companies, as critical spillover facilitation intermediaries. The dissertation makes original theoretical contributions to cluster strategy by developing the Strategic Spillover Capture Model specifically grounded in the Nigerian industrial zone context.
