Occupational Therapy Services and Motor Development of Preschool Children with Developmental Delays in Anambra State

This study evaluates the role of occupational therapy services in supporting motor development among preschool children with developmental delays in Anambra State, South East Nigeria. Developmental delays in preschool-age children, encompassing delays in gross motor, fine motor, and adaptive functioning, often signal the presence of underlying neurodevelopmental conditions requiring early, structured therapeutic intervention. Occupational therapy, which focuses on enhancing participation in everyday activities through targeted skill development, is a key component of early intervention services globally but remains largely inaccessible in most Nigerian states. Using a descriptive survey and case review design, the study examines data from forty preschool children with developmental delays referred to occupational therapy services at two intervention centres in Awka. Motor development is assessed at intake and at twelve-week intervals using the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales. Descriptive statistics and paired samples t-tests are used to evaluate pre-post intervention changes. The study also surveys caregivers on their understanding of occupational therapy, home practice adherence, and perceived progress. Findings are expected to demonstrate significant motor gains among children with consistent occupational therapy attendance and strong caregiver engagement. Recommendations include establishing occupational therapy posts within special education schools and integrating early developmental screening into maternal and child health services in Anambra State.
