Integrating Multi-Source Remote Sensing with Hydrological Modelling for River Basin Management in the Sokoto-Rima Basin, Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The Sokoto-Rima River Basin supports over 10 million people across North West Nigeria through irrigation agriculture, pastoralism, and artisanal fishing, yet faces compounding pressures from population growth, climate variability, and infrastructure change. This study integrates multi-source remote sensing with hydrological modelling for comprehensive river basin management in the Sokoto-Rima Basin. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool model is parameterised and calibrated using remote sensing inputs including MODIS evapotranspiration products, Sentinel-2 land use maps, SRTM terrain data, and CHIRPS precipitation estimates. Streamflow records from eight gauging stations are used for model calibration and validation, achieving Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency values above 0.75 for all stations. Scenario analysis evaluates the hydrological impacts of projected climate change under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios from CMIP6 models combined with upstream reservoir development plans. Results project significant reduction in dry season streamflow under both climate scenarios, with RCP 8.5 reducing mean dry season flow by 31 percent by 2050. Spatial analysis identifies sub-basins contributing disproportionately to sediment and nutrient loading, informing targeted watershed management interventions.
