Prevalence of Alcohol Use Disorder Among Male Traders in Onitsha Main Market, Anambra State

Alcohol use disorder is a significant public health concern in Nigeria, with commercial settings often functioning as contexts for heavy and hazardous drinking patterns. This study investigates the prevalence and correlates of alcohol use disorder among male traders in Onitsha Main Market, Anambra State, South East Nigeria. A cross-sectional design will recruit 280 male traders aged 18 to 60 years from five market sections using systematic random sampling. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) will be used to classify drinking patterns as low risk, hazardous, harmful, or dependent. Sociodemographic data including age, ethnicity, religion, years of trading, and marital status will be documented. Chi-square tests and logistic regression will identify significant predictors of alcohol use disorder. Prior studies in high-activity commercial settings in South East Nigeria suggest that peer culture, financial stress, and cultural norms around drinking contribute to elevated AUDIT scores. This study will add to the evidence base for alcohol intervention programs in occupational settings and provide data for policy recommendations regarding alcohol sales regulation and trader health in South East Nigeria.
