📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with accelerated cognitive decline in older adults, yet the relationship between glycemic control, cognitive function, and quality of life in this population has not been adequately examined in South West Nigeria. This study investigates cognitive functioning and health-related quality of life among older adults with type 2 diabetes attending the endocrinology outpatient clinic at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), Ile-Ife, Osun State. A cross-sectional design will recruit 150 patients aged 60 and above through consecutive sampling. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) will assess global cognition across domains of memory, attention, language, and visuospatial function. The WHOQOL-BREF will measure quality of life. Clinical variables including HbA1c, duration of diabetes, hypertension comorbidity, and current antidiabetic regimen will be extracted from medical records. Multiple regression will examine associations between glycemic control, cognitive scores, and quality of life dimensions. Evidence from sub-Saharan Africa suggests poor glycemic control independently predicts cognitive impairment in older diabetic patients. Findings will support cognitive screening integration into routine diabetic care at OAUTH. Keywords: type 2 diabetes, cognitive function, quality of life, older adults, Ile-Ife
