Impact of Poor Waste Management Practices on Construction Project Sustainability in Akwa Ibom State, South South Nigeria

Construction waste management is an emerging dimension of sustainable project management that has received limited attention in South South Nigerian construction research. This study investigates the impact of poor waste management practices on construction project sustainability in Akwa Ibom State. A cross-sectional survey will recruit 160 site managers, environmental officers, quantity surveyors, and project managers from 20 active construction projects in Uyo and Eket. A structured questionnaire will assess waste generation rates, segregation practices, disposal methods, recycling utilization, and sustainability performance. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) waste management indicators will frame sustainability assessments. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression will examine the relationship between waste management quality and sustainability scores. Literature from Nigerian construction projects consistently links poor site waste practices to environmental degradation, regulatory violations, and avoidable cost inflation. Findings will support the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency in developing construction waste guidelines.
